The Galley Above Top Right, is Thanks to Alex Williamson.

This Web Site about Northmavine Up-Helly-Aa is still 'Work in progress' as we continue our efforts to get pictures that are missing for a small number of Jarls in the earlier years.

If you have any pictures that you think might be suitable or can identify any of the missing names in the early squad pictures (***** or ????) please contact Alistair.

New Jarl's will be added as each years celebrations take place.

Up-Helly-Aa Galley building and presumably burning had taken place in Northmavine in the early 1900's as can be seen with some of the early photo's from Hillswick and Ollaberry, however no Up-Helly-Aa had taken place in Northmavine since the second World War.

In the mid 70's, a local resident, Willie Leask, had a desire to re-start this celebration for the end of winter and coming of summer.

After speaking to some of the community around where he stayed at Urafirth, a small committee was set up with Chrissie Manson as secretary, the aim was to bring the festival back again to Northmavine.

Northmavine Up-Helly-Aa was re-born in 1975 and was a huge success. Since that day it has continued to flourish and grow as the years roll on.

The links Below will take you to each years Jarl and other pictures since restarting in 1975.

More on the story of the current Northmavine Up-Helly-Aa can be found at the following page.

The Story of Up-Helly-Aa

The pictures above both seem to be off the same galley at different locations with the one in the top left hand corner being outside the then Ollaberry Shop.
